Commercial Hotel

The Commercial Hotel, or ‘Railway Inn’ as it was known locally, was built around 1870 near to Rainhill Station to accommodate increasing numbers of people arriving by train. It was rebuilt in 1927 and was enlarged to three storeys on Station Road. The building has Victorian features both inside and out, including etched glass windows advertising the brewery, established by Joseph Jones which produced Knotty Ash ales. Frederick Deeming, the notorious murderer, stayed there in 1891 posing as Albert Williams.

In 2018, the Commercial Hotel was bought and refurbished by Amber Taverns Ltd. Rainhill Civic Society along with local businessman Mr Les Nixon (right) donated a restored gas lamp believed to have been made at Melling’s Iron Foundry in Rainhill. The picture below shows the official handover at the opening of the newly refurbished Commercial Hotel on 13th June 2018.
