In 1753, Parliament passed an Act making local trustees responsible for collecting tolls and maintaining the road between Liverpool and Warrington. The following year an Order was made for milestones to be set up on the turnpike road, the miles being numbered from Liverpool Exchange.

The tenth milestone, which possibly dates from 1829, can be seen on the Skew Bridge and the eleventh on Warrington Road between St Bartholomew’s Church and Rainhill Stoops.

Improvements to the road enabled a stage-coach service to start operating in May 1760 between Liverpool and Warrington, and onwards from there to Manchester and London.
The Skew Bridge milestone is Grade II listed and detailed on the Historic England website.
