The Deane’s were a very old established Rainhill family. In 1621, Thomas Deane, his wife Ann and son George held 7 acres of land. George purchased a further 27 acres in 1629 which passed to his son Edward in 1651. A century later, descendant Edward Deane held 42 acres of land in Rainhill and Cronton.
In 1840, John Melling came to Rainhill and established an iron foundry, primarily to provide locomotive repair work. By 1851 twenty people were employed. The Commercial Hotel, or ‘Railway Inn’ as it was known locally, was built around 1870 near to Rainhill Station to accommodate increasing numbers of people arriving by train.
